How We Support Every Student’s Journey

Academics

Every Student's Educational Needs Are Different

That is why Hanna Academy focuses on tailoring instruction and curriculum to each individual student. Through skills-based education, students demonstrate academic and vocational standards based on their demonstrated critical thinking, literacy, and application skills.

Careful consideration is given to how each student learns, their academic habits and their strengths and challenges.

Learning That Makes Sense

A Personalized Academic Journey

Our integrated curriculum adapts to each student’s needs while meeting high school diploma requirements.

Hanna Academy offers a flexible academic model grounded in trauma-informed care, universal design, and individualized support. Students learn core subjects through integrated, looping courses that meet California graduation standards. Rather than rely on busywork or homework, we focus on essential skills and authentic learning. Our 4-3-2-1 grading system mirrors real-life expectations—rewarding effort, growth, and self-advocacy. Every student starts with a base and receives layered support to build confidence and competence over time.

What We Teach

Four Core Subjects

Our core curriculum includes English, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Each is taught in multi-grade, looping classes that allow students to build skills over time while meeting graduation requirements:

English:

9/10 and 11/12 cohorts, emphasizing reading, writing, and critical thinking.

Math:

Integrated courses with spiraled content, ensuring Algebra is covered across years.

Science:

Two-year loop using the spiral method, combining physical and biological sciences.

Social Studies:

Rotating content in history and civics tailored to student credits and grade level.

How We Grade

The 4-3-2-1 System

We grade for growth, not just completion. Our 4-3-2-1 scale helps students understand their performance in real-world terms:

4 =

Above & Beyond (A):

Mastery of material plus extra effort, leadership, or support of peers.

3 =

Meets Expectations (B):

Solid understanding and consistent performance.

2 =

Making Progress (C):

Growing toward independence with some support.

1 =

Trying (D):

Demonstrating effort, participating with assistance, and showing up.

We do not assign homework or extra credit. Instead, students are encouraged to revisit and improve work. Every grade is a chance to reflect, revise, and move forward.

Social-Emotional Learning

Wellness is Part of the Work

Every day begins with a 30-minute advisory period focused on connection, regulation, and readiness. We embed social-emotional learning and counseling into our school day, offering individual, group, and drop-in support based on each student’s IEP. From our self-regulation room to our daily check-ins, students learn to advocate for themselves, recognize their needs, and return to learning with confidence.
